CAMP ABILITIES was started in 1996 with the objective to empower children with sensory impairments to be physically active members of their schools, communities, and society.
In 1999 Camp Abilities was recognized as Program of the Year by the Adapted Physical Activity Council of the American Association of Health Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
In 2005 Camp Abilities was recognized as an international leader providing a model for research, professional training, and an opportunity for children with impairments.
Camp Abilities has developed as the leading training site for professional development for teaching children sports that are blind all over the world.
Camp Abilities has grown from a local camp for children who are blind and or visually impaired, to an international camp with international campers.
This past summer was Camp Abilities fourth year in Arizona, Vermont and Alaska.It was the second year for Camp Abilities Puerto Rico and the first year for Camp Abilities in West Chester, PA. One year camps have been held in Colombia, South America, Iowa, Toronto, and Vermont.
The summer of 2008 will bring the first year for Camp Abilities Maryland at Lions Camp Merrick.
Plans are being made for camps in Texas, Omaha and Florida.
